REDcert2 Certification – Sustainability in the Chemical Industry
REDcert2 Chemical Industry enables chemical manufacturers and downstream processors to replace fossil raw materials such as crude oil or natural gas with sustainable raw materials. By using alternative energy sources such as hydrogen, biomethane, bio-naphtha or raw materials such as biomass and waste or residual materials, fossil raw materials can increasingly be replaced, thereby reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Certified companies that use sustainable materials in the production of chemicals are thus given the opportunity to market their products as so-called ‘biomass- or recycling-based products’ and to advertise them accordingly.
The requirements of the REDcert2 standard apply to suppliers and conversion plants – including upstream and downstream companies in the chemical industry. All businesses and production units associated with the certified company (e.g. purchasing, transport, trade, processing) that are involved in the implementation of the standard must be identified, listed and included in the certification process.
Advantages of REDcert2 Certification Chemical Industry
Reputation
By independently verifying sustainability and product-related claims, you are making a valuable contribution to the resource transition.
Risk Mitigation
Minimise risks in your supply chain by reducing your dependence on fossil resources.
Sustainability Claims
You can create product-related claims about sustainably certified biomass or waste/residual materials used at a chemical site.
Use of sustainable renewable resources: During the manufacturing or purchasing process of the REDcert2-certified product, at least 20% of the fossil raw materials required for the production of this product must be replaced by an equivalent amount of sustainably certified materials in the manufacturing and plant network.
The sustainable raw materials used by the chemical industry for the production or replacement of fossil materials must come from a REDcert, FSC or PEFC certified company or from other systems that have been positively evaluated by the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI).
Certified products must also have reference formulations. These define the amount of fossil raw materials required for the production of the respective substance. Instead of reference formulations, actual formulations from the past three years can also be used.
Mass Balance based on chemical valences: The standard is based on a mass balance approach developed for large-scale chemical processes to account for the complexity of chemical manufacturing processes. The mass balance approach is not based on the mass of the raw materials used, but on the chemical valence of the individual atomic components. It represents a stoichiometric balancing approach based on an equivalence consideration and documented in a corresponding accounting system.
If you decide to work with GUTcert, an on-site audit will be conducted to assess compliance with the requirements of the REDcert2 Chemistry system. Once GUTcert has successfully reviewed the audit documents, you will receive a certificate proving compliance with the sustainability criteria in accordance with REDcert2 Chemistry. The certificate is valid for one year and is renewed before expiry by means of a recertification audit.
If your company is already REDcert-EU certified, you only need to have the specific REDcert2 requirements checked. With little effort, you can open up new markets for your company and greatly increase your competitiveness.
